![]() In a conversation I recently had, the truth that we only have today (Yesterday is gone and tomorrow is uncertain.) came to the fore, along with the adage, “one day at a time.” This was a good reminder to me at this point in my life, and I took the thought with me as I went about my work on a project in our library. With the above-mentioned insight about living in the present fresh in my mind and heart, I decided to put on a playlist that included the old gospel song, “One Day at a Time,” which I had grown up listening to. I found the words of the old song meaningful and poignant: “Lord for my sake, teach me to take one day at a time.” We aren’t reminded to live in the present just because. As this song points out, it is for our own good that we should learn to “take one day at a time.” I appreciate the fact that the song is written as a prayer, rather than presuming to have the proper attitude on one's own. As I write these words, further encouragement on the matter comes to mind, from the gospel of Matthew: “Do not worry about tomorrow; tomorrow will take care of itself. Sufficient for a day is its own evil.” (6:34)
