This morning, I went into the office I use to check on my seedlings, and turn on the grow light. Haphazardly, I decided to check on the cucumber seeds I had planted last week. As I lifted the lid of the small plastic container I had planted them in, I was shocked to see that, not only had they already germinated, but they were a couple of inches tall. It was as if they were saying, “Hello – here we are.” As I write this, I am reminded of the gospel passage (Mark 4:26-29) which says: This is how it is with the kingdom of God; it is as if a man were to scatter seed on the land and would sleep and rise night and day and the seed would sprout and grow, he knows not how. Of its own accord the land yields fruit, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. And when the grain is ripe, he wields the sickle at once, for the harvest has come.” It is truly amazing how, year after year, from tiny little seeds, plants grow up and produce a bountiful harvest (we hope!). This is just a reminder, as 1 Corinthians 6 says, that “God gives the growth.”
